Purisima Creek Hike

For Samantha's last day of Spring Break, I asked her what she would like to do, and she said she wanted to go for a hike somewhere new. So we went down to Half Moon Bay and hiked up to the ridge above Purisima Creek. Very beautiful! We started out in the redwoods and about 1,200 vertical feet later we were in warm California sun. When we arrived at a nice lunch spot, I kicked away the decomposing soil underneath a pine tree to make a nice place to lean against the tree. With Samantha sitting on my lap, I absent-mindedly groped for rocks to throw at a tree across the trail. When I didn't feel one, I looked down and my hand was 2 inches away from this black scorpion!
He was ready for me!

It's easy to forget that scorpions live in places besides Mexico. We are conditioned to remain vigilant when down there. The only other time I saw a scorpion in California was when we were camping on the Salmon River in Humboldt County.
Scorpion on a stick. No, we did not kill him, that's bad karma.

Those zebra pants made her fast as a gazelle. How's that for a mixed metaphor?

We played with creatures more docile than scorpions, too...

You'd be forgiven for thinking this banana slug was really a giant neon colored dog poop.

Purisima Creek. It's not dry yet...
